San Diego based YouTuber Ricky Roy joins San Diego Media Pros on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 to talk about his experience making a living with his Two Bit Da Vinci YouTube channel. 

Ricky describes Two Bit da Vinci as “an engineer's guide to the galaxy, breaking down the complex stories shaping our world, with fun facts and key insights.” He has almost 750,000 subscribers and has posted 452 videos and counting!

There’s much to know about running a profitable channel and we’ll talk about:

Technology – Ricky built his studio as well as the supporting infrastructure. Hear about cameras, microphones, sound recorders, lighting, computers, and media storage needed to host a channel.

Business – What does it take to pull likes and subscribers? Branding, marketing, incorporation, and staffing make it an actual business. And you must work within the rules framework of YouTube. 

Content – No channel can have a following without content. Ricky travels the world in search of content related to home improvements and solar. What are the pros and cons of producing content with a short shelf life (e.g. news/sports talk) versus educational topics that become a perpetual reference?
